Nicholas inhaled the thick night air. He had to get out of here. When Abby pressed him with questions, her nearness suffocated him. His head pounded, and he could feel his control slipping. Then the blood…

He shook his head. No, spilt wine had soaked the white linen. Get ahold of yourself. The imaginings had to stop. He couldn’t work like this—live like this.

Nicholas grabbed a lantern from the barn and lit the wick. The flame ignited and cast distorted shadows on the walls. He needed to calm down, to clear his head and think. Ten years after leaving Abby and he was still doomed to lose his composure around her.

Why hadn’t he let her believe he had another family? It would give Abby the perfect reason to let him go. She’d have been upset and angry, but then perhaps she could divorce him. A scandal would be unavoidable, but they’d only been married one night. He’d say whatever was needed to make her seem innocent and him the scallywag. She could then move on with her life and marry someone else Then she could have children like she’d always wanted.

You haven’t fooled God.

Nicholas picked up a rock. He tossed it in his palm a couple times then hurled it deep into the woods.

He hadn’t been able to hurt her like that. The aching pain in her voice had been his undoing.

Nicholas paced in the garden fighting to keep his self-loathing at bay for having to hurt Abby once again. There were so many things he longed to say. He wanted to scream, It was all a mistake! His whole life—a mistake. He shouldn’t have enlisted. He shouldn’t have married her before being shipped off. And he certainly should never have come back. His fists curled, but he kept them by his side instead of railing at God for not listening to his past prayers each time before he’d stormed onto the battlefield or started a new assignment. Please, get me back home to Abby.

He spied an ax in the corner, picked it up, and headed to the wood pile. His muscles flexed and tensed as the ax swooshed through the air, then struck the logs with a resounding crack. His leg pained him, throbbing in tempo with the pulse in his temple, but the monotony and rhythm of the movement soothed his nerves.

He should have been crippled for life, but a young aid made it possible for him to walk. Most of the other burn victims, if they lived, became invalids, their joints solidifying. The horrific events of that night flashed through his memory, and he gripped the ax and swung harder, splitting each piece of wood until it neared mere kindling.

His mind broken, his body marred, his skin twisted, but he could still move. He owed that to Guillaume. God had left him to die, but a young physician’s assistant had stepped in and changed his fate.

The truth was ugly. People had suffered all around him, some pleading for mercy, others for death.
